The Motel 6 Vacation

The decision was made to go on vacation after the 25th of December, 2020. I decided to also see if any friends that I called up would join me on this road trip. Unfortunately, none were able to so I had to strike out on my own.

During this time I had to make sure my car was ready. I needed to change the front and rear brakes, which took a while because I had to wait for some time to change the rear brakes with the help of my brother who’s more of an expert on vehicle repairs than I am. I had to be patient to do this before my trip because once I decided to go on this vacation myself, my car had to be efficient to make this trip. Some of my family were concerned about my road trip, telling me to be safe and never travel on the road at night. I knew I had to be safe and only traveled before dusk.

Preparing for this trip a week in advance before my vacation. The plan was, Pasadena, Burbank, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and lastly Santa Maria, California all along the Californian coast. Not gonna lie I was a little nervous to be doing this but I made a plan to be ready.

Packed up my gym bags, my laptop, toothbrush, toothpaste, and all my personal hygiene needs as well as my allergic reaction medication due to hives I got before the trip. Also leaving with $2000 in my pocket which is unsafe bringing large cash in your pocket but needed spending money.

Luckily I get my rear brakes replaced, fill up my gas tank as I headed toward my first stop, Pasadena, California. The drive was almost like 40 minutes from my residence in Placentia, California to get there, making a pit-stop seeing the Pasadena City Hall along with various pictures of the city. Even saw a couple taking wedding pictures as well as a 70-year-old man road tripping through Route 66. Happen to find the guy a little aloof but didn’t make much of him. The good thing is I managed to find a Motel 6 to stay for the day under $100.

The very next day I was on my way to Van Nuys, California then towards Burbank. I didn’t plan that far ahead at the moment. I couldn’t find a Motel 6 available because I went into the front office and had to wait a while for rooms available. To kill time, a headed off on my skateboard and skated along the street.

Bang.

Violent crash as I look over my shoulder, a three-car collision in traffic. They beat up the car in the back, a white car in the middle, and a van in front. The guy in the front checks on the lady in the middle car to see if she’s okay. The three exchange car information but the guy in the back car drives off suddenly. A shitty thing to do, yet somehow looking at him and his beat-up car, wasn’t a surprise he’d drive away so quickly.

Get me some lunch, Burger King, look for another available motel, and find lodging on the last day of 2020. Grab my bags toward my room and find what a dump of a place I stayed at but I didn’t care.

I relax for a few hours letting time pass me by. Decide to open the door to walk outside my room and down the hallway a naked woman asks if I’d go down to the front desk to help her get a room key. This lady locked herself out of her own room and needs my assistance. I was hesitant, I didn’t know what to do as I looked around and notice across my room door I see a cleaning lady. I tell her the situation about the naked lady locking herself out of her motel room. She looks at the naked lady, then turns her head back towards me the cleaning lady gave me a funny look on her face walking toward the naked lady to help out. Go back inside my room asking myself what I’d just seen and all I could do was giggle to myself forgetting the cleaning lady muffled a rude word in her native Spanish tongue.

Spend the last few hours on a cold night on the last day of 2020. Give my brother Mike a phone call wishing him a happy new year. Waiting as I check a notification on my Instagram page to notice my old friend Andre live chatting with other people on the platform. I manage to talk to my old buddy before midnight as we both were happy cause it had been a long time since we last spoke. He’s my best friend that I was appreciative to talk to and how 2020 has affected both of us and the rest of the world. We have a good chat and wish each other a happy new year. It felt good talking to an old friend that it gives me hope to hang out and catch up on life and what the future holds.

To pass along the time, I finish a few drawings before midnight and head off outside to see fireworks shoot up into the new year sky. It was a good thing I didn’t drink or drive as I stayed in my motel room. Strangely I remember seeing a thrown-out condom in the motel hallway.

Thousand Oaks, California.

Hopeful to find a Motel 6 that had a clean room than the dumpy motel in Van Nuys.

Head over to go find Paradise falls where I manage to find where there was a parking lot a hundred yards from the hike up to Paradise Falls. What I should have done was leave my skateboard in the car and should have brought bottled water for hydration. The beginning of the hike began in the morning with my skateboard in hand. Joyful to go on this hike as a took lots of pictures and videos of seeing Paradise Falls along with other tourists sightseeing and making a new friend, Ruben.

Continued to hike a couple of hours and just started getting tired of hiking so damn much. Didn’t even have breakfast but kept on trailing what I thought was no end in the hiking trail sight. Doubt was creeping into the trails, desperate for water along the way. Stuck it out and made it uphill to the top of a beautiful view and saw the trail lead back to the park and noticed Ruben with his pet dog on the trail saying farewell knowing I’ll never see my new friend again…well maybe.

Ventura was on the highway.

Before starting the car, I put on the America song, Ventura highway seeing the pacific coast. Almost like a piece of heaven and ocean smell of the sandy beaches. Motel 6 right next to the shoreline only to run into another room availability wait. I toured the beach and skated along the Ventura coast as crashing waves sway the sands. A call to my parents for the heads-up on my vacation while getting a cheese pizza but no pepperoni. Should have said something but decided just to enjoy my time there for the day. I talked to some locals about life and how Covid-19 at the time negatively affected businesses. Can’t blame these people and was said some owners are willing to break Covid-19 protocols to keep their businesses running.

I noticed in my bank account $600. Another stimulus check for the beginning of 2021. In retrospect not a lot of money but I’m grateful for it.

The Motel 6 room a stayed in required my credit card. Whatever Motel 6 policies were was because if the room gets trashed I’m paying for it. Thank goodness I’m a clean man and not a shrewd one. I slept well after taking a long shower and reflect every time because I needed a vacation to get away from everyone and enjoy life. I knew I was alone on this trip but not lonely.

Once Ventura was seen, Santa Barbara was on the horizon. Again as I say with luck made it to a nice Motel 6 right next to the beach. I had some Mexican food but no flavor, it was tasteless. The Motel 6 was better if not fancier, the employees told me $1 million was spent redesigning the place. To me, both Ventura and Santa Barbara were the same because I lodged right next to another beach.

The last few days were spent in Santa Maria, California. While there I took pictures of where my grandma used to live. I miss her to this day and won’t ever forget about her and all the times my family vacationed there. It was a little bittersweet but I was glad I’d taken this vacation.

Coming home, the road home took me three hours and no traffic. The drive was smooth but half my gas was used up. I needed this vacation to give time for myself because I’ve never done a road trip before. It was scary for me to go on the road by myself because of the dangers of getting on the drive, because I drove during the daytime, never at night. Took the risk made a few little mistakes and my vacation turned out to be pretty good and relaxing along for the drive. Long showers in the Motel 6 bathrooms because there was no water bill necessary for me to pay.
